Teatru Manoel will be organising 'La Serva Padrona' on Tuesday, 17th January 2017 at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta.

The show "Rousseau e La Serva Padrona" (a theatrical action followed by the performance of the intermezzo "La Serva Padrona" by G. B. Pergolesi) tells the story of the great support that, in 1752, Jean-Jacques Rousseau made in Paris in favor of the Italian style of opera buffa. He contributed to affirm the superiority of Italian music in the world and of the "great Neapolitan school". The theatrical action is a fictionalized reconstruction, in a playful manner, of historical events that really happened in the middle of the ‘800 in Paris. The Italian company, directed by G. Bambinì, became so famous thanks to the chance meeting Rousseau, to arouse in Paris a querelle (known as the "Querelle des buffons") between those who supported the beauty of Italian music and those who claimed the supremacy of the French one. Even the King, with the Queen and Madame de Pompadour, came to the theater to assist to the opera, deciding who was the winner between "ACIS and Galatea" by J. B. Lully, and the "La Serva Padrona" so ending the querelle. The king gave the victory to the French, forgetting that Lully was born in Florence (he was another Italian musician).
