THE 220TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 2-YEAR FRENCH BLOCKADE OF MALTA

11/05/2018 - 10/06/2018
THE 220TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 2-YEAR FRENCH BLOCKADE OF MALTA

The Historical Re-enactment Group of Malta (HRGM) is commemorating the 220th anniversary of the 2-year French Blockade of Malta that took place between 1798 & 1800. This was a most tumultuous period of Malta’s history with 3 regime changes that resulted in a social, political and cultural earthquake and the death (according to some accounts) of 20% of the country’s population.

The project is spread over a 2-month period with the climax taking place between 4 and 10 June 2018. The series of initiatives shall be held at different venues across the Malta and Gozo and shall include the participation of around 600 people of whom some 400 yielding from across the EU. The activities shall include theatre, dance, musical performances, lectures, an exhibition, a debate, and Malta’s biggest ever historical re-enactment.

The HRGM is a non-profit organisation set up in 1998 and with its 70 active members is Malta’s largest re-enactment and living history group. The Society brings together history, dance, music and military enthusiasts and researchers who over the past two decades have together worked to create outstanding cultural events across the Maltese Islands with prestigious organisations such as The Malta Community Chest Fund, Heritage Malta, Din l-Art Helwa, Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna, the Malta Tourism Authority, the Armed Forces of Malta and others.

The project aims to enhance the rich cultural profile of our capital city – and our country at large – vis-à-vis the unique heritage bestowed to us by the Knights of Malta, and to bring together people from across Europe to celebrate our rich cultural diversity and shared values of co-operation and friendship.

Especially in the local context, such a sizeable endeavour shall require, and bring together people – especially youth from a multitude of artistic disciplines who shall have to work hand-in-hand – and in doing so shall enhance both their skills and develop the ability to work in teams and to work as part of a larger community.

This project is endorsed by the Valletta 2018 Foundation.
