This is the third event being organised by The Valletta Grand Prix Foundation (VGPF) which is being held at UNESCO's World Heritage City of Valletta during the month of May 2011. This annual Historic Classic Car Event is the only one of its kind staged entirely around Valletta's ring road.
In 2009 and in a matter of six weeks the VGPF was formed, board members elected and a defined date for its first event was set. It attracted 50 enthusiastic Maltese participants, plus a few well known foreign guest drivers and a foreign Race Director. The organised 2-day Sprint Event of approximately 1 Km was a complete success.
In 2010 the event was expanded to include a 5-day Pre Main Event Programme which commenced on the eve of Monday 3rd May with a Welcome Reception for all participants. Between Tuesday 5th and Friday 7th May, a host of activities were held and included wine tasting, a day trip to sister island Gozo, Scrutinieering, Sprint Runs on a Quarter Mile Drag Strip, a visit to Malta's Old Capital City of Mdina and more. Friday afternoon saw the Councours d'Elegance held at Valletta's propular Waterfront Cruise Liner Terminal. Over 40 exhibits in prestine condition were on display. Four International judges from the UK and US awarded the points and placings for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The Main Event started on Saturday morning with timed Spint Runs held all day. The official race timings for the Valletta Grand Prix Shield were held on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday the 4.2Km Full Circuit Demostration Runs were held all day together with other show activities. Over the weekend various local motoring clubs led by Malta's Old Motors Club participated in static car exhibitions and paraded via the full circuit at the end of each full day programme.
The VGPF has an exclusive agreement to run the Valletta Historic Classic Car Event for a number of years. With the logistical support of the Valletta Local Council, Floriana Local Council, Malta Tourist Authority, the Malta Sports Council, Transport Malta (TM), Ministry for Infrastructure, Transport and Communication (MITC), the Malta Police Force, VISET, together with the collaboration from Old Motors Club (OMC), Island Car Club (ICC), Malta Motorsport Federation (MMF), Malta Drag Racing Association (MDRA) and our 2010 Corporate Sponsors - Malta Tourist Authority - www.visitmalta.com , Kunsill Malta ghall-iSport, HSBC Bank Malta plc - Concours d'Elegance Partners, BMW Group Malta and Muscats Motors Ltd. - 2010 Pace-car Partners, Seasus - Technology Partners, Vodafone Malta Ltd. - Communications Partners, GasanMamo Insurance, Quintessentially Jaguar, 202 Jewellery, Mdina Glass, Salvox, Banif Bank Malta, Shell and Blokrete, we are pleased to confirm that the 2010 event attracted even more interest and spectators, besides being a complete success.
The Valletta Grand Prix is an important element to Malta's 2011 calendar of events. The event not only attracts local aficionados, but is an added attraction to foreign motoring enthusiasts and tourists alike. It creates a new niche market associated with prestigious European Motor Sport activities and today we are proud to confirm that the Valletta GP Event is on the inetrnational scene and Motoring Calendar of Events. It is seen as the Monaco of the Med. The 2010 event attracted a mix of over 70 local and foreign participants. From the encouraging response and interest received so far from both foreign and local prospective participants, VGPF envisages that participation for the 2011 VGP Event will increase to a maximum of 120 cars.
