Fertility Goddess Cult

The pendants, magnificent pottery and finely decorated objects discovered among the debris close to the temples recall a golden age of peace and prosperity.

Originally from Europe, particularly Sicily, the first inhabitants were clearly influenced by mysticism. Carpeted with green and the haunt of dwarf elephants, Malta must have been a paradise Island. To celebrate this, the Islanders built a number of magnificent temples dedicated to the famous Venus of Malta, the sleeping goddess of fertility.

In fact, there is a succession of trilithon doorways in freestanding megaliths that lead to a number of chambers, at the heart of which is an altar dedicated to the Mother-goddess. The statuettes of fat ladies, that always seem to go beside her, anticipated a sculpture tradition, which is later echoed in the figurines found on the Greek Islands.
