THE APS MDINA CATHEDRAL CONTEMPORARY ART BIENNALE

13/11/2017 - 07/01/2018 09:30 - 17:00
THE APS MDINA CATHEDRAL CONTEMPORARY ART BIENNALE

The APS Mdina Cathedral Contemporary Art Biennale is a large-scale contemporary art exhibition held in the Mdina Cathedral Museum and directed by Dr Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci. From November 13, 2017 to January 7, 2018, the museum will be filled with contemporary artworks and site-specific installations by 25 local and international artists. The artworks all develop upon this edition’s theme: The Mediterranean: A Sea of Conflicting Spiritualities.

Participating artists hail from Malta, United Kingdom, United States of America, Germany, Austria, Russia, Jordan, Israel, Greece, Lithuania, Georgia, Latvia, France, Lebanon, Poland, Serbia and Australia.

This exhibition follows the success of the 2015-2016 Mdina Biennale that initiated a framework for artists, curators and researchers to work together to establish a creative space. The event has a global following and was constantly featured in the Maltese and international press.

Each artist has been assigned a particular space within the museum and will be developing projects that respond to its permanent collection and this year’s subject. Once again, an exhibit dedicated to Maltese modern artists will hang alongside medieval, baroque and contemporary artworks, bridging different eras and art historical periods by focusing on the overlapping nature of art across time. Frank Portelli and Esprit Barthet are the chosen artists of this year’s exhibition.

A fully-fledged catalogue with essays written by academics and curators will be published by Horizons.

Dr Schembri Bonaci is working with curators Nikki Petroni and Melanie Erixon together with a vibrant organisational team.

Opening hours:

  • Monday to Saturday: 9.30am – 5.00pm
  • Sunday: 11.00-17.00
