Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, is China`s grandest festival, with over 4,000 years of history, celebrated with unbound enthusiasm in its land of origin and rapidly increasing in popularity. Chinese New Year signifies the traditional values and pursuit of the Chinese people, upholding family reunion, peace, prosperity and harmony between man and nature, thus making it a culturally significant part of world cultural diversity.

Introduction to the Performance

Happy Chinese New Year (欢乐春节) is an internationally acclaimed cultural brand launched by the Ministry of Culture of China in 2009, in response to the ardent welcome and enthusiasm with which Chinese Spring Festival cultural activities hosted overseas were  received.  Happy Chinese New Year upholds Happiness, Harmony, Dialogue and Sharing, and has gained widespread popularity through its advocacy of universal values of friendship peace, unity and sharing, becoming the most popular Chinese cultural brand event around the world.

China Cultural Centre in Malta (CCC)and Kalkara Local Council join hands on this occasion, to co-organize “Happy Chinese New Year in Kalkara” charity performance, bring together peoples from all walks of life to enjoy the warmth and joy of Chinese New Year, and partake in the goodwill of a benevolent cause. The exuberant experience of this variety performance is brought to you by 13 visiting representative members of Guizhou Congjiang Ethnic Art Troupe, as part of the International Chinese Spring Festival celebratory series of events taking place  in Malta.

Founded in 1983, Guizhou Congjiang Ethnic Art Troupe, from Congjiang county in Guizhou Province P.R.China, is a professional theatrical company that have participated in cultural exchange artistic performances held in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, amongst other countries. The troupe specializes in folk performance arts of ethnic minority groups situated in China`s south-western province of Guizhou a region home to a flourishing civilization spanning over five thousand years with a distinct and colourful cultural heritage, forged out of ecological wisdom and closeness to nature observed by its ancient agrarian communities. Guizhou is regarded as an idyllic land of splendid scenery and rich diversity, harmony between natural environment and human activity, confluence of tradition and modernity, sustainable equilibrium between development and ecology.

Happy Chinese New Year in Kalkara features prized  ethnic specialties such as  the Dong ethnic group Grand Chorus ( described as a voice of a nation, and a culture of humanity by UNESCO, and was inscribed in UNESCO`s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009), and Miao Ethnic Group "Fanpai Wooden Drum Dance, listed  as National Level Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Peoples Republic of China, among other ethnic songs and dances which have been passed down from one generation to the next, as an essential means of educating the next generation, protecting and preserving identities, lifestyles and social customs of indigenous Chinese ethnic minority groups, as well as perpetuating cherished beliefs, folklore. legends and vast time-honoured legacy of intangible cultural heritage skills.
