This autumn sees the centenary year of the ending of fighting on land, sea and air in World War One, The Great War. At this highly significant moment, The New Choral Singers will be presenting an evening of remembrance and choral music dedicated to those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom, reflecting also on Malta’s contribution as a place for respite and recuperation of the veterans during the bloody conflict. This event will be taking place at St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, Valletta, on Sunday 4 November 2018 at 7.30pm under the distinguished patronage of Her Excellency, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta, and in collaboration with ‘Festi Ċelebrazzjonijiet Nazzjonali’ and the Pro-Cathedral.

As part of the evening, The New Choral Singers, together with a brass and percussion ensemble set up for this event, will be presenting the international premiere of ‘The Great War Symphony’ written by British composer Patrick Hawes, former Classic FM composer in residence. The work, which has just been premiered at London’s ‘Royal Albert Hall’, is a musical monument to all those who lost their lives in World War I, with each movement depicting a different year of the Great War. It uses poems written in and about the War to evoke feelings and thoughts about the sacrifices made and the strength of human will.

The singers, brass, and percussion ensemble, will be under the direction of the choir’s Musical Director, Mauro Farrugia, whilst world acclaimed Wayne Marshall will be accompanying them on the organ. Soprano Claire Debono and Tenor Juan Gambina will be guest soloists.

Entry to the event is free of charge and no reservation is required. However, a retiring collection will be made in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation. Patrons are kindly being requested to be seated by 7.20pm.

On the evening, The Undercroft Café, located right under the Pro-Cathedral, will be open for refreshments both before and after the event.

The New Choral Singers is a registered voluntary organisation. VO/034. Further information is available on the choir’s website www.thenewchoralsingers.com
