FROM PREHISTORIC TO CONTEMPORARY NARRATIVES

ħaġarna encompasses a play of narratives related to the communities of Xagħra, where a public sculpture by Victor Agius will be installed permanently in the public gardens overlooking 8th September Avenue - the village’s main street.

Acting as a reference point to time and place, the sculpture physically and figuratively embodies references to various aspects of Xagħra’s tangible and intangible heritage.

Two huge boulders will be used to create Ħaġarna together with terrarossa earth, light, and passages from poems by Immanuel Mifsud and the late Mgr Michelangelo Apap.

Strategically located among four prehistoric sites, the sculpture will act as a converging point for multiple performances by various local communities fusing multidisciplinary and ephemeral interventions by the artist together with the villagers while bridging the native, the folkoristic and the traditional with the contemporary.

The project was presented in 2015 during a National Call - Art in Public Spaces which was launched by the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, in collaboration with the Ministry for Justice, Culture and Local Government, Arts Council Malta, MUŻA (Heritage Malta), the Ministry for Gozo and Xagħra Local Council.
