01/09/2014 - 07/09/2014

VIVA - the Valletta International Visual Arts Festival, is being organised for the first time between the 1st and 7th September 2014.

VIVA aims to create a unique platform for contemporary art in Malta and to initiate a process of change in the local cultural scene. It aims to internationalise the visual arts scene in Malta by creating new artistic networks that bring together international and local curators and artists of different generations. VIVA also aims to create situations where these new networks last beyond the festival itself; for example, it will bring to Malta a number of curators-in-residence who will meet local artists and propose ideas for exhibitions in 2015.

VIVA 2014 will feature work from locally and internationally reknown artists including Mieke Bal, Democracia, Austin Camilleri and JP Azzopardi amongst others. VIVA will also bring to the fore local young emerging artists through Divergent Thinkers - an exhibition which presents contemporary artistic practices by young Maltese artists that explore divergent thinking.

A major highlight of VIVA is also the islands' first Curatorial School - an intensive one-week curatorial programme with international speakers from various European institutions. Speakers will include Mieke Bal (cultural theorist and critic, Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis, University of Amsterdam), Maria Lind (Director, Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm), Marina Wallace (director, Artakt and Professor of Curating, Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London), Rosie Cooper (Project curator, Liverpool Biennial), Ine Gevers (freelance curator and artistic director, Foundation Niet Normaal), Kit Hammonds (tutor of Curating Contemporary Art, Royal College of Art, London), Pam Meecham (Professor of Education and Museum Studies, Institute of Education, University of London), Michelle Williams Gamaker (UK video artist) and Democracia (Madrid-based artists' group).

VIVA is being co-organised by St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Arts Council Malta, the Valletta 2018 Foundation and Aġenzija Żgħażagħ.
