MOSTA ROTUNDA

Die St. Marienkirche ist die Gemeindekirche von Mosta und wurde 1860 auf den Mauern ein anderen Kirche aus dem Jahre 1614 errichtet. Der Innenraum ist mit seiner runden Form und klaren Gestaltung sehr beeindruckend.

Die atemberaubende Kuppel ist die viertgrößte der Welt und berühmt für ein Ereignis aus dem 2. Weltkrieg – ein Bombe, die die Kuppel durchbrach, landete auf dem Kirchenboden und glitt durch die Halle, ohne zu explodieren! Die Kirche war bei Bombeneinschlag voller Menschen aber keiner wurde verletzt. Die Bombe ist nun im kleinen Museum der Kirche ausgestellt.

Mostas namhaftes Fest – Mariä Himmelfahrt ist ein Höhepunkt der örtlichen religiösen Festlichkeiten. Die Zusammenkunft vor der Rotunde ist ein Aus-druck von Freude, Spaß und gemeinschaftlichem Frohsinn. 

Tours

As from the 1st of April 2018, a new tourist tour system to the Sanctuary Mosta Dome was introduced. This system helps tourists to benefit from the Sanctuary architecture, prestigious art and historical paintings of this national monument.

Opening hours for tourists are as follows: From Monday to Friday from 9:30am till 5:00pm ; Saturday from 9:30am till 4:30pm ; Sunday from noon till 4:00pm. 

The main sacristy is left open so that the tourists can visit this part of the church as well.

There is space where one can pray quietly. Prayer books in different languages can be provided.

The above requires various expenses to be incurred. As a result, tourists older than 12 years of age who enter the sanctuary have to pay a minimal fee of €2. This includes VAT.
