IGLESIA PARROQUIAL DE MOSTA

La iglesia de Santa María, edificada en 1860 sobre otra iglesia construida en 1614, es la Iglesia Parroquial de Mosta. El interior de esta iglesia es impresionante con su forma circular y su luminoso interior.

Su formidable cúpula es la cuarta más grande del mundo y es famosa por el incidente que tuvo lugar durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial: una bomba, que perforó la cúpula en 1942, cayó y se deslizó por el suelo de la iglesia sin explotar. La iglesia estaba abarrotada de fieles cuando cayó la bomba y todos resultaron ilesos. La bomba se exhibe actualmente en un pequeño museo anexo a la iglesia.

La fiesta de la patrona de Mosta, Santa María o la Asunción de Nuestra Señora, es la fecha más importante de las celebraciones religiosas locales. El rally de Mosta frente a la Rotunda es una manifestación de alegría, de festejos y de bienestar social.

Tours

As from the 1st of April 2018, a new tourist tour system to the Sanctuary Mosta Dome was introduced. This system helps tourists to benefit from the Sanctuary architecture, prestigious art and historical paintings of this national monument.

Opening hours for tourists are as follows: From Monday to Friday from 9:30am till 5:00pm ; Saturday from 9:30am till 4:30pm ; Sunday from noon till 4:00pm. 

The main sacristy is left open so that the tourists can visit this part of the church as well.

There is space where one can pray quietly. Prayer books in different languages can be provided.

The above requires various expenses to be incurred. As a result, tourists older than 12 years of age who enter the sanctuary have to pay a minimal fee of €2. This includes VAT.
