Federation of Underwater Activities Malta

The Federation of Underwater Activities of Malta - the FUAM - traces its roots back to 1955 when a group of spear-fishing enthusiasts decided to form a club in order to start competing in international competitions. The Malta Sub Aqua Club was thus constituted on the 30th of March of the same year.

In 1959, the Malta Sub Aqua Club became a founder member of the "Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques"- the CMAS - and in that same year, the same club organized the World Underwater Spear-fishing Championships.

With the increasing interest in SCUBA (Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) diving and scientific research, the Malta Sub Aqua Club became affiliated to the sports, technical, and scientific committees of the CMAS.

In 1979 other clubs started affiliating to the Malta Sub Aqua Club and it was decided to change the club's name to Federation of Underwater Activities of Malta. The FUAM organizes several dives throughout the year and its standards and qualifications are internationally recognized.

In 1987 the FUAM found its place in the international scene when it was bestowed with the honour of organizing the CMAS World Congress.

The FUAM also organizes international underwater photographic competitions (the Blue Dolphin of Malta being one of them), specialized courses and scientific research.
