The Old Parish Church of Għajnsielem still stands, but as the population of the village grew, a larger church was needed. Thus, in 1924, work began on the Gothic-Lombard style church of today.

Work was intermittent, with construction having to stop during World War I, as well as when the master mason, Toni Vel
