Beaches to Visit

Many bays in Malta and Gozo are accessible to people with accessibility needs, with special wheelchairs for beaches, ramps, hoists and platforms with ramps leading to the sea.

Malta

Mellieha Bay – also called Għadira Bay- is the most accessible beach in Malta and also the longest sandy beach stretching across 800m. Making it one of the most popular beaches with holiday makers. The beach slopes gently into ankle-deep crystal clear water for approximately 50-meters, making it a perfect friendly beach.

Diving

Gozo’s Nautic Team Diving Centre allows divers to enjoy the Island’s warm Mediterranean waters, rich marine life, fascinating wrecks, caves systems and spectacular reefs. The Nautic Team are certified and experienced in diving with disabled people. The IAHD qualified instructors offer one-to-one diving classes which are suitable for various types of handicap and experience.

Accommodation

The Maltese Islands offer a variety of accommodation including hotels, apartments, villas, farmhouses and boutique hotels. Legally all Maltese accommodation providers need to offer accessibility assistance. To ensure that your accommodation is suitable for your disability please contact them directly to plan your stay.

Restaurants

The flavour of Maltese cuisine is the result of a 7,000-year relationship with the many civilisations that have occupied the Maltese Islands. To ensure that your chosen restaurant is suitable for your disability please call directly.

Airport

If special assistance is required at Malta International Airport, staff are trained to make your arrival or departure from Malta as seamless and comfortable as possible. You can book Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM) services through your airline carrier.

In order to help the airport deliver a better and more efficient service, we strongly recommend that you book at least 48 hours before departure.

Autism-Friendly Programme

The Autism-Friendly Programme asks autistic travellers through Malta International Airport to complete a form to help identify ways in which the team can appropriately assist them. Travellers can also order a free wristband or cap; two accessories designed to ensure that the airport’s staff can immediately identify the person needing additional assistance. Please contact the airport to learn about the various other initiatives in place to support qualifying travellers.

Gozo Ferry

Contact Gozo Channel in advance of your journey to advise them of the date and time you expect to arrive at the ferry terminal so they can prepare to assist your boarding and crossing.

Public Transport
  • Buses are equipped with a wheelchair ramp
  • All buses have priority seating for passengers with mobility needs.
  • Signal buttons and ticketing machines are located at a suitable height for wheelchair users and other passengers with mobility restrictions.
  • Buses are equipped with audio and visual systems which announce the name of the next bus stop and the final destination.

Other Transportation

Wheelchair Friendly Care Hire (WFCH), provided a broad range of specially adapted car hire vehicles to cater for the needs of disabled drivers and passengers. Vehicles can be hired on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis and provide a door-to-door delivery and collection service.
