COSPICUA MARKET

Triq il-Gublew tal-Fidda, Cospicua, Malta

Cospicua Market

The Cottonera open market that takes place in the fortified city of Vittoriosa, known as Birgu, extending to Cospicua (Bormla) along Silver Jubilee street and is held every Tuesday from 6.30 am to 1.00 pm. The streets alongside and in between the old and newer lines of fortifications are closed to motor vehicle traffic and hundreds of hawkers' stalls are set up early in the morning. Considered as one of the largest open air markets on the island, the numerous stalls offer visitors a variety of items ranging from clothing, food items, fruit and vegetables, household items, shoes amongst others. The setting of this market beneath the Cottonera Lines is certainly unique. It is mostly locals who visit this market, so this is an excellent opportunity to mix with the Maltese people and experience the local culture.

There is also a "boot sale", held at il-Fortini on the outskirts of old Birgu starting early every Sunday morning until noon (or earlier). One can find ‘antiques' (usually bric-a-brac) and odd artifacts in this market.

In addition, one can also walk down to the Birgu Waterfront and yacht marina and experience one of the many restaurants along this front offering a variety of gastronomic choices.
