The Chinese Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, is China`s second most important traditional festival, after the Spring Festival. It is determined by exact astronomical observations of the sun's longitude and the moon`s phases, which typically define the Chinese the luni-solar calendar. Owing to the symbolic wholeness of a large and luminous full moon, the Moon Festival is widely associated with sentimental connotations of unity and reunion,

enjoyment of friends close by, and transmitting affection to loved ones far away through the far-reaching moonlight. Outdoor entertainment under a bright moonlit sky is an all-time favourite way of celebrating this annual festivity.

Introducing Fujian Arts & Culture Troupe

With a long-standing history and abundant cultural resources, China`s southeastern coastal province of Fujian has enjoyed an inclusively diversified and integrated culture for thousands of years. Fujian prides itself on having over 70 state-owned performance troupes and an excellent selection of plays to its name, having won numerous awards at important cultural activities, both at home and abroad.

Melodious Fujian - Moon Festival Performance  (at Pjazza Teatru Rjal, Valletta on Sat 22nd Sep at 19:30hrs), is presented by Fujian Arts & Cultural Troupe – which is composed representatives from the Fujian Opera Dance and Drama Theater, Fujian Provincial Acrobatic Troupe, Quanzhou Heritage Protection Center of Marionette Theatre, and Jinjiang Hand Puppet Art Protection Inheritance Center.

Fujian Opera, Dance and Drama Theatre has a series of classic repertoires which have won National "Wenhua Award", among others. The large-scale dance drama "Dream of Maritime Silk Road" was performed at United Nations Headquarters, UNESCO Headquarters, and EU Headquarters, and continues to enjoy widespread popularity. Fujian Acrobatic Troupe is a leader in its field, having toured over 40 countries and regions in five continents, and received more than 60 medals, including the International Gold Award. Quanzhou Heritage Protection Center of Marionette Theatre is the national-level grade intangible cultural heritage inheritance unit of Quanzhou Marionette Troupe. Chinese puppetry art - bearing valuable models of exquisite puppet maneuvering skills, as well as unique puppetry carving, modelling art techniques and craftmanship - was included into the "Excellent Practice Directory" of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Quanzhou Marionette Theatre has visited nearly 70 countries and regions on five continents for cultural exchanges. The Glove Puppet Show of Jinjiang Hand-Puppet Art Protection Inheritance Center was included in China`s “National Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection List”, while the “Puppet Talent Training Program” was inscribed in the "Excellent Practice Directory" of human intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. Lauded as “Oriental Art Treasure”, several items in their repertoire were awarded National Prize and Gold Award in International competitions.

During its visit to Malta, Fujian Arts & Cultural Troupe seeks to display the distinctive charm of Fujian culture – through a vastly varied compilation of songs, dances, acrobatics and puppetry, while aspiring to promote and deepen cultural dialogue and bonds of friendship between the peoples of China and Malta.
