A PIANO RECITAL BY JULIA MILLER

Polish pianist Julia Miller will be giving her third solo recital for this year at The Green Room, Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Valletta on Thursday 12th December. Following the success of her previous two recitals in April and October, Julia Miller will be playing Frederick Chopin’s Ballade in G Minor, and selected works from composers Alexander Scriabin, Ignacy Paderewski and Enrique Granados.

Before coming to Malta seven years ago, Julia Miller had already established herself as an international artist both as a soloist as well as in chamber music. In Malta she also built a reputation as a very sought after musical collaborator, including with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Critics have lauded her performances for versatility and passion as well as for the colour and clarity of sound.

The first and most notorious of his ballades, Ballade in G Minor by Polish pianist and composer Frederick Chopin famously featured in Roman Polanski’s The Pianist, the Polish director’s celebrated movie about the holocaust. Hailed by fellow composer Robert Schumann as a work of genius and the best of all of Chopin’s compositions, the Ballade in G Minor was written during the composer’s transition from Vienna to Paris. It is considered to be one of the most accomplished compositions ever for the piano. During this recital, Julia Miller will also play Chopin’s Opus 50, three mazurkas, inspired by this typical Polish dance in 3/4 called mazur and which the pianist Arthur Rubenstein called ‘the most Polish of all of Chopin’s compositions’.

Ignacy Paderewski’s Cracovienne Fantastique is another piece played by Julia Miller that is based on Polish folk dance music. Paderewski, himself a great concert pianist and eventually Prime Minister of Poland, wrote the Cracovienne mainly for himself to perform. It is a virtuoso piece with an infectious tune that immediately made it a concert favourite.

Alexander Scriabin was a Russian composer whose early stages of career were very much influenced by Chopin’s music. During this recital, Julia Miller will play two of his four nocturnes. In contrast to the better known Chopin Nocturnes these works are of a more spiritual nature, using the theme of the night to cast a contemplative mood, talking to the soul more than the heart.

Enrique Granados’ Allegro de Concierto is the Spanish composers’ ultimate tribute to Chopin even though it is unashamedly Spanish in flavour. It was called Granados’ most unapologetic showpiece, a unique masterpiece for piano favoured by such world class pianists as Arthur Rubenstein.

Those wishing to attend for this recital should book their tickets by email on juliamillerpianist@gmail.com Prices of tickets are at Eur.12 each. The recital starts at 19.30.
